Hello, fellow Amateur Builders and Buskers
My organ is almost complete now; for the past couple of weeks I have been solving the final issues (leaks, finishing, adjusting, tuning…). I have just updated the web page with new construction pictures.
http://members.cox.net/wmbusker/Uni26.shtml
But I have hit a problem:
The middle melody pipe (C), second rank, is not working properly. The organ have four ranks of melody pipes, 13 pipes per rank, in order from front to back, Stopped, Stopped Celeste, Octave Open and Open flutes.
The troublesome pipe, when mounted alone, works well. When mounted with all other pipes, except the one directly in front of it, the pipe works fine to. But when the first rank pipe is installed, the little guy goes crazy; I am unable to tune it; it goes directly from B to C#.
This pipe is surrounded by the Stopped C in front, Octave Open C at back, and Stopped Celeste C# and D to left and right. The pipes are mounted 1” apart and 1 ¾” between ranks. This leaves about 1/16” side gap between the larger central pipes and about 3/8” gap to the front and back.
I have partially solved the problem by raising the troublesome pipe by about 1” and installing thin cardboard sheets between it and its neighbors; I can tune it that way, but it is wavering around the C note, and it sounds awful.
I have the same problem, to a lesser extend whit the fourth rank C pipe (the open flute). The first and third rank pipes are working fine.
Does someone have a clue? Is it the case of pipe “drawing”? I would appreciate any help, tip or guess.
Thank you,
Wagner Mello

Wagner, Did you conquer your problem or at least discover it's cause? |

Hi Wagner, Congratulations on a superb build of John Smiths Universal organ. The small problem you are having with the pipe "drawing", maybe the posting by John Smith on the Mechanical Music Digest pages may help. Not quite sure if this is the same as you are having, but it may lead to a solution. The link is as followes:- http://mmd.foxtail.com/Archives/Digests/200708/2007.08.17.05.html hope that this is of some help. Sid. |

Thank you for your comments and the tips.
I have solved the issue satisfactorily by raising the trouble pipe by about 1 1/4" and by installing two pieces of thin hardboard, 3 inches tall by 6 inches long, between the pipe and its neighbors, running all the way from the first to the last rank of pipes.

Hi folks, I had two pipes on my JS 26 that had a similar problem. They are both in the second row. I turned them around to face backwards. They are both very happy now. The third row is piccolo pipes that are raised up out of the way.
