Which programme to use for music transposing? I have heard much said in favoir of Cakewalk particularly the early version going back to Ver3. This is very difficult to find and does have some compatiblity issues with XP, seems to work with up to Win 98. There are many other programmes, your input about them would be useful to others setting out on this path. Arthur

I’ve use Cakewalk Ver3 on XP and now with on Vista without any problems in anyway at all. I’ve also tried a lot of different programs of one sort or another right up to Cakewalk 8 for arranging music but keep coming back to Cakewalk Ver3 the rest is just over the top for my needs.

I use Noteur for transposition. It took a few days to figure it out totally, but it does a good job. Plus the price was right.
I also use Anvil for any actual "staff" editing.
I have heard of Cakewalk, but haven't tried it.

A question for Phil.
I have used Cakewalk Pro.3 for many years on my Windows ME PC for arranging MIDI music. Recently I bought two new computers working on Vista. Cakewalk works OK on Vista for arranging but I am unable to play MIDI files on either the new PC or my laptop. The soundcard only plays the percussion on channel 10. All the other channels are silent. It is exactly the same result in Vista Media Player. This seems to be a general problem with Vista that a lot of people know about. Nigel Perry in France flagged this problem up on the **** forum but there was no useful answer from anyone. So when you say that you have no problems with vista, Phil, perhaps you can tell me how to overcome this playback problem.

Hi Bob, The only thing I can say is I upgraded both my computers Vista from XP but at the same time went to MIDI to USB. I have not tried a new installation Vista on a new computer yet or tried to use the old game port to MIDI. I will be putting a new computer together soon to replace my old XP computer in one of my sheds so I will beadle to give more idea’s on this soon. I also have a window 98se in one of the other sheds that will be updated with the old XP computer, before I upgrade to Vista I will do some tests on it. The only thing is I only have a ghost image of Cakewalk 3 so it doesn’t install in the same way.

I use an old version of cakewalk express, It works well with older versions of Windows. I now have to open it through the back door "Run as administrator" with Vista, also the help functions are not supported any longer. I really like the piano scroll functions.

I have heard Harmony Assistant is a good program for Transposition. I know it has music roll ability, and will warn if using notes not contained in your specific organ.
