Single Manual ,Three rank pipe organ,Built by "windchest".utilising a 58 note Switchbox saved from an "Aeolian" pipe organ. playing 65- note rolls. The rollbox is driven by a 12 volt variable speed motor.
Please have a look at my website for Allsorts of pianola and pipe organ stuff.www.cadisheadmotorcycles.com

More from Windchest.
Three Rank, Roll playing Midi Pipe organ.

Rank 1 – wooden stopped flute – 8ft – 49 notes - C2 to C6
Rank 2 – Metal Open –------------ 8ft – 49 notes – C2 to C6
Rank 3 – "Spitzflute" - 4ft –------------ 61 notes – G2 to G6

The 49 wooden flutes are fitted in the rear of a small "Viscount" 61 note keyboard Classically voiced electronic organ, All on 1 windchest.
The open metal pipes and the Tapered "Spitzflute" rank are fitted into the top "case", again, all are on one windchest. (All the pipes use "direct action pallet magnets).

The "Viscount" still operates but I have fitted Extra contacts on each of the 61 Keys, these are connected to a "Midi Encoder", this, in turn is coupled to a "Midi decoder", Which supplies the power to the Pallet magnets.
Each of the 3 ranks has a separate earth rail, these can be switched on or off using stop switches.
The blower used is a small "Discus" unit, its output is connected directly to each of the 2 windchests With no reservoir or any means of regulation. I have had no problems with this and it works fine.
The 8ft Flute is tuned to A=440hz, The open metal 8ft rank is tuned slightly "sharp", the give a "chorus" effect.
The spitzflute (spotted metal). Was originally off a Church Organ and is in fact a "Spitzquint", used as a 4ft rank. (Hence the G2 to G6 configuration).
After using the organ for approximately 6 months I became interested in Pianola "Roll Readers", I just happened to have about 100 –65 note "pianola" Rolls. And then came across 2 Aeolian 58 note Switchboxes.
One of these boxes was "Unrestorable", but, the other, with a good clean and a few minor adjustments, worked perfectly.
I bought a 65 – note Rollbox, complete. And Fitted the whole lot into the organ ,the roll drive uses a 12 volt dc variable speed motor, unfortunately this was not quite fast enough ,so I used some Sprockets and chain off an old "Meccano" set, this worked fine.
The switchbox wires are all connected to the same "Midi Encoder”.
I built a small "vacuum" pump and used this on the aeolian switchbox.
I know these switchboxes originally used "pressure", but sealed from the atmosphere they work on vacuum. Well, Mine does!
After a few minor adjustments everything worked.
So, I can play the pipe organ manually from the "viscount" keyboard. I can also add the viscount sounds.
I have a Yamaha SY77, also an Ahlborn H6 Classical keyboard, I use these to extend the bass on the pipe organ, I use a Yamaha MDF 2 midi data filer to record the data received from the 65 – note rolls.
Some notes, on some pianola rolls tend to "Linger" when play on a pipe organ, I overcame this problem by recording the midi signals, Then using The sequencer on my SY77 to "shorten" the note, it worked great!
I have completed another 65- note roll reader which can be used on a vacuum or pressure mode, I used the original primary pouch board but built my own "switchbox" assembly. This is on e-Bay at the moment.

I also compose classical pipe organ and orchestral Music.
There are about 12 pieces on my site on the page "My Compositions".
I have actually composed approximately 200 pieces.
Thanks for reading this and happy organ building.
Cheers Mr Christopher Bruce (Windchest)
